Honoring caregivers balancing family and aging parents<\/p><\/div>\r\n

<\/h4>\r\nShe\u2019s up before anyone else. She packs lunches and checks homework and coordinates school pickups. She answers the call from her mom\u2019s doctor, manages the medication schedule, and drives to appointments across town. She fields questions from both directions daily: \u201cWhat\u2019s for dinner?\u201d<\/em> from the kids and \u201cDo you remember what medications I\u2019m supposed to take?\u201d<\/em> from her parents.\r\n

<\/h4>\r\nShe is a mother. She is a daughter. And most likely, she is exhausted.\r\n

<\/h4>\r\nShe\u2019s part of what researchers and sociologists call the \u201csandwich generation.\u201d<\/strong> Adults, most often women in their 40s and 50s, who are simultaneously raising children and providing care for aging parents. This Mother\u2019s Day, we are thinking specifically about her.\r\n

What is the Sandwich Generation?<\/strong><\/h4>\r\nAccording to the Pew Research Center, nearly half of adults in their 40s and 50s have a parent age 65 or older and are either raising a child or financially supporting one.<\/a> Millions of these caregivers are also working full-time.\r\n

<\/h4>\r\nThe toll is real. Studies consistently show that family caregivers, particularly women, experience higher risk of depression, anxiety, sleep disruption, and physical health decline than their non-caregiving peers.<\/a> The American Psychological Association describes caregiving as one of the most significant sources of chronic stress in modern life.\r\n

<\/h4>\r\nAnd yet, most sandwich generation caregivers don\u2019t describe themselves as caregivers at all. They say they\u2019re just doing what needs to be done.\r\n

The Signs She\u2019s Running on Empty<\/strong><\/h4>\r\nCaregiver burnout doesn\u2019t announce itself. It arrives gradually, and then all at once. We see it in the mornings that feel impossible before they\u2019ve even started, in the resentment she feels and then immediately feels guilty about, in the appointments she\u2019s missed for herself because there simply wasn\u2019t time.\r\n
